Dixwell/Newhallville Community Mental Health (D/N CMHS) is a private non-profit organization that assists its community in a variety of ways. It began more than 40 years ago when community residents of Newhallville came together to form a counseling center on Thompson Street. The idea: to give the community's families a place to work through some of their difficulties. In 1983, funded by the State Department of Mental Health, D/N CMHS was incorporated as a non-profit. The founders had set out to establish an accessible, culturally sensitive that embraced that the value that "We are in the Community to Serve the Community." In 1992, the board of directors accepted a proposal that enhanced the mission to include providing an array of family support services, including positive youth development, strengthening families, community organizing and information and referral services.
